How To Protect Your Home From A Blizzard This Winter

If you’re like most people, when you hear the word “snow” you probably run to the nearest grocery store to buy eggs, bread and milk just in case you’re snowed in for the entire winter (or the world is ending). While that most likely won’t happen unless you live in a secluded area in the mountains, it is possible for a winter storm to cause damage to your home. Sometimes, blizzards happen so quickly that you don’t have much time to react, and by then it’s too late.

At Citiwide Adjusters, we’re a firm of public adjusters serving Philadelphia, PA, and the surrounding areas. Since 1988, we’ve been helping people get back the money they deserve after some kind of damage to their property. Since we believe that it’s always better to be prepared, we’re going to provide you with advice on how to protect your home from a blizzard this winter:

Make sure your roof is sound – The last thing you want during a winter storm is damage to your roof due to the heavy snow. We bet that you don’t want to be comfortably sitting by your fireplace and enjoying a cup of hot chocolate when part of your roof suddenly caves in, causing you have nowhere to hide from the cold. The Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety (IBHS) states that most roofs can support 20 lbs. per square foot of snow. Also, the steeper the roof is, the less snow will accumulate, so you’ll want to watch your flatter roofs.
Protect your water pipes – As public adjusters serving Bucks County, PA, and other local areas, we’ve seen our fair share of frozen and burst pipes due to cold winters and power outages. If a power outage does happen to you during a blizzard, the best ways to protect your pipes include:
Keeping your house warm with a generator or a wood stove
Sealing doors and windows to hold in the heat
Insulating openings in your attic
Having a technician install “heat tape” around your pipes before inclement weather strikes
