Don’t Overlook These Three House Fire Hazards

Barring severe flooding, it’s hard to imagine a worse disaster that could befall your home than a fire. If your home is not properly safeguarded, even a small flame can quickly become a conflagration that engulfs the house that you worked so hard to finance. Even worse, house fires claim over two thousand American lives per year. The stakes are too great to neglect basic fire safety at home.

As a fire damage claims adjuster that services the Camden County, NJ, area, Citiwide Adjusters is well-equipped to help you rebuild your life after a house fire by earning you the highest possible settlement from your insurance company. For your sake, however, we hope it never comes to that. Follow these basic house fire prevention tips to keep your property, yourself and your loved ones safe.

Inspect Your Wiring

Thousands of electrical fires break out in American homes every year, resulting in costly damage claims and hundreds of deaths. If you’ve never had your home’s wiring inspected, it’s time to do so. Hire a respected, licensed electrician to take a look at your home’s electrical system. Any aluminum wiring should be replaced with its copper equivalent, as copper is less fire-prone. Any frayed or tattered writing should also be replaced immediately.

You can take precautions on your own, as well. Visually inspect any outlets or appliance cords for damage and replace them as needed. And since overloaded sockets are a common cause of fires, don’t plug too many cords into an outlet and buy a power strip as needed.

Cook Carefully

Cooking is one of the most frequent causes of house fires, and many homeowners let their guard down when cooking because it is such a commonplace activity. However, cooking is hazardous when homeowners are careless.

When you cook, never leave your stove unattended, as fires can break out quickly and unexpectedly. Even if you are cooking something in the oven on low heat, make sure to check in frequently. Keep flammable materials like oven mitts away from open flames. Be especially careful when cooking with oil: Never heat oil above its recommend temperature, and if a grease fire breaks out, never throw water on the flames. Instead, smother the flame with a pan lid.

Know Your Smoking Hazards

Smoking is notoriously terrible for your health, but it can also be terrible for your house. Lighting a cigarette inside your home (or lighting any other object intentionally) is inviting disaster into your home, especially if you smoke while relaxing on the couch or in bed. Falling asleep with a cigarette in your hand can quickly become fatal. It’s best to quit smoking entirely, but if you can’t quit just yet, at least smoke outdoors, away from your home.

By following this advice, you greatly reduce your risk of a house fire. And if an accident happens, we at Citiwide Adjusters will be here for you.
