Are You Ready For Mischief Night?

You probably know we’re not talking about stocking up on toilet paper and eggs. Like most people, your Halloween weekend will be spent attending parties, trick or treating with the kids, watching spooky movies and eating candy. For some, however, Halloween is an opportunity to cause a little mischief, and not all of it puts a smile on everyone’s face.

Mischief Night, the night before Halloween, is traditionally designated for pranks that range from harmless jokes to outright vandalism. Now, let’s make it clear that while vandalism rates do go up on October 30th and 31st, they tend to do so around any major holiday. We’re not trying to fearmonger – but our public adjusters near Bucks County, PA do want you to be aware and keep your property safe.

Strategic barriers: Fences, shrubs, bushes and walls are all deterrents to casual vandals. If the it’s too difficult to enter your property, vandals will give up and move on to the next potential victim. You don’t have to install a high-tech or iron security fence – the simplest of barriers will send a strong visual message.

Keep an eye out: You can’t stand vigil at all hours of the night, but periodically checking on your property, especially if you’re visible to passers-by, is a strong deterrent. You can also set up security cameras to monitor your property. Camera not in the budget? Buy a dummy one. If vandals think they’re being watched – regardless of whether they are – they’ll be less likely to attempt harm for fear of being caught.

Support community anti-vandalism efforts: These are twofold. First, join or support your local neighborhood watch. These community efforts are put together by volunteer residents committed to keeping their neighborhoods safe. Second, support programs that encourage young people to engage in productive, creative activities like sports, music, art and mentoring. Most Mischief Night vandalism is committed by young people with nothing better to do – so give them something better to do.
